Frequently asked questions
Here, you will find answers to the most commonly asked questions about eligibility, procedures, software requirements, and more. If you have additional inquiries, please feel free to contact the project coordinators atinfo@manydaughters.com.
Study enrollment
Q.
I would like to participate, but I do not have a research partner. Can I be my own research team?
A.
Yes! As long as you have already completed a PhD in one of the social sciences, you can participate as a solo member.
If you are a PhD candidate, you can participate if you find a partner who already holds a PhD (e.g., your PhD supervisor, a postdoctoral candidate, etc.).
If you wish to participate and need a partner, feel free to contact us at info@manydaughters.com - perhaps we can help you find a match!
Q.
I come from another discipline than economics. Can I participate?
A.
Yes! If you obtained a PhD in another social science (psychology, political science, sociology, marketing, etc.), you are welcome to join us.
If you obtained a PhD in a discipline outside of the social sciences, you can still participate, provided that your team member holds a PhD in a social science.
If you have any doubts about your eligibility, please contact us.
Q.
I am not familiar with the German Socio-Economic Panel (SOEP) dataset that will be used for this study. Is that a problem?
A.
Not at all! As long as you are familiar with empirical quantitative methods, you should be able to contribute.
Q.
I would like to participate but I am not sure I can complete all parts of the study at the required times. Should I sign up?
A.
To ensure that the data is of the highest quality, please only sign up if you are sure that you can complete all elements of the study in time.
Q.
Can I be involved in more than one research team?
A.
No, please contribute input to one research team only.
Study implementation
Q.
What do I need to submit for my participation in the study to be complete?
A.
You will need to complete all 3 surveys sent to you (including all questions in the survey).
You will need to submit a pre-analysis plan testing the 4 hypotheses outlined. Please see PAP guidelines under Info for RTs for more detailed instructions.
You will need to produce separate statistical code in Stata for each hypothesis tested. Please see Info for RTs for more detailed instructions.
Q.
What do I need to do to access the SOEP dataset?
A.
You will need to sign a contract to access the sample of the SOEP data that we will provide to all RTs. You will have to strictly abide by the rules outlined in the contract.
Even if you already had access to the SOEP dataset in the past, you will still need to sign the contract we give you.
Q.
I already have access to the SOEP dataset. Can I use it to test the 4 hypotheses?
A.
No, for the purpose of this study, please only make use of the 5% subset that we give you.
Q.
Can I propose to test additional hypotheses in the pre-analysis plan and code?
A.
No.
Q.
What statistical software is required to produce the analyses?
A.
We require that RTs produce their statistical code using Stata version 14 or later.
Unfortunately, we will not be able to accept code using earlier versions of Stata or other software such as R.
Q.
What will happen if my code does not run or I realize that I made a mistake in my submission?
A.
To test and achieve computational reproducibility, you will upload your code to the project website. The project coordinators subsequently run the code on the 95%-sample of the data and check if the code runs without errors.
Upon submitting your code you will receive feedback on your submission in the form of the censored log-file latest on the next working day.
The censored log-file does not contain any analysis output from running your code, but it indicates if, in what lines, and what kind of error messages running the code produced. If there were errors, we ask you to check your code and make a new, updated submission.
If you think you have made a mistake, please contact us. In general, RTs are asked to not change the analysis described in the PAP unless the specified analysis cannot be executed in the data.
Data usage and authorship
Q.
Can my participation remain anonymous?
A.
Since we need to link all the outputs you produce (pre-analysis plan, statistical code, and all 3 surveys), your participation in this study cannot remain anonymous to the coordinating team.
If you complete all study elements, you will be offered to be a co-author on the paper (listed by name and not in the form of a consortium) that results from the project. Thus, if you accept this co-authorship agreement, you will not be anonymous in the final version of the paper.
Moreover, RTs (i.e., your name and the name of your team member if you have one) will be linked to their PAP, but they will not be connected to their code, their answers in the surveys of this project, or any particular analysis or results.
Q.
What are the terms of co-authorship?
A.
The coordinating team will prepare a draft based on your proposed analyses and survey answers.
Co-authorship will be offered to the RTs who completed all elements of the study (pre-analysis plan, statistical code, and all 3 surveys) within the timeline outlined.
RTs will be given 30 days to review the manuscript and make any comments.
RTs who do not wish to become co-authors or who do not want to be linked to their PAP may withdraw from the collaboration before the paper is submitted for publication. If they withdraw, they will not be listed as co-authors. Their anonymized RT-PAP, code, and survey answers will remain part of the paper.
Q.
Can I continue to use the SOEP dataset I received for my own research?
A.
Yes. The dataset you will receive is a subset of standard SOEP releases. But note that this dataset corresponds to only 5% of the actual dataset. Please bear in mind that you are not allowed to use the complete dataset before submitting all the necessary documentation to the #ManyDaughters study. After the data collection of the current study is finished, you may get access to the full version of the dataset upon signing a standard data use agreement with the SOEP data management team, and they will provide you with the complete dataset if you wish.
If you are already using or already used the SOEP datasets for your own research, please refrain from performing analyses related to the #ManyDaughters study. Running analyses with data not provided by the project team will result in exclusion from the study and not being listed as a co-author.
Please contact us if you wish to receive the complete dataset after the study is finished.
Q.
Is there an embargo on the data?
A.
Please note that you are not allowed to use the complete dataset before the submission of all documentation and getting approved by the project team.
Q.
Can I discuss the analyses, data, or results with other RTs during the study?
A.
No. It is very important that you do not communicate with other RTs about the study until the study is completed.
